courses.communicationdiva.comHere are 3 mistakes YOU can avoid that will help you to ACE your next job interview:

  1. Not doing your homework. Industry research is not difficult to do these days with the internet, and is absolutely critical to a successful job interview experience. Knowing more about the company than what you find outlined in the job posting is key, and there are lots of ways to do that research that will take you time but will be well-worth it in the end. Aside from the company website, try looking at their social media sites, industry newsletters, and also union or association publications if applicable. The more you equip yourself in understanding the organization, the more serious an applicant you will be perceived to be.
  2. Rambling on and on. When the interviewer asks you to “tell me about yourself”, the response needs to be quick and needs to point to your skills and abilities rather than an actual history of your life so far….which might be fascinating, but isn’t really the point of the request. You are answering the company’s call to fill a need…so showcasing how YOU specifically can fill that need is how you want to craft your response to this question. BE the answer to that need.
  3. Not having questions prepared to ask at the end of the interview. There is always a moment in a job interview where the interviewer asks, “so, do you have any questions for me?” There are several really good questions that you can ask here, and having at least one, if not two or three ready to go shows interest and initiative. Try asking “what do you like about working here?” and see what you learn.

There are many more common mistakes you can avoid, and all sorts of ways to STAND out in a job interview. These are a few of the tips you might want to know before you go in to the interview room.
